Welcome to October 2026—next stop Easter and then Sotheby’s.

Seasons blink by, change, and collections are reborn.

Seasons of change and years in motion often arrive wrapped in familiar phrases, many repeated so often they barely register. For me, as I approach the fall time of life, meaning returns in quieter forms: the calm of a brisk morning, the charm of birds retreating from the summer garden, and the stillness of a fleeting moment. A deliberate pause in my forward motion is often rewarded with an awakening to how a life well lived should feel.

That same awareness of passing seasons shapes how I see the life of a collection. As a collector, I relish the many turns of the seasons I have experienced. These larger cycles of seasons and years naturally release pieces long locked away in private hands. When the final season unfolds for collectors who came before, treasures are dispersed onto the market, carrying memory with them. New life and energy then emerge in design circles and auction houses, where old collections become new again.

The image below serves as a quiet reminder that what is preserved, released, and rediscovered continues to gather meaning with each new season.

After decades in a Detroit collection—and earlier in Mary Chase Stratton’s personal collection—the large, banded vessel came to market. Created in 1913 by the founder of Pewabic Pottery, this long-admired piece then joined our collection. After years of waiting for its return to the open market, this work of Detroit history is unlikely to appear there again. The joys of collecting ebb and flow with the seasons. As stewards of our fleurdetroit brand, home, gardens, the wild around us, and our collections, the seasons and years add a lustrous nacre of passion to our lives.
